1.Get Multiple Estimates
A good method is to get 3 estimates from different contractors. It is good to compare the rates, materials, timeline, etc. Be sure to ask how long the estimate is good for if it is not indicated.
2. Take Your Time
Whenever possible, take your time when making a decision. Be cautious if the contractor is pressuring you into making an immediate decision or if they are asking for a large deposit or payment upfront. Take time to read the estimates and the contract before agreeing to anything. Ask family or friends, do research online to determine what is best for you.
3. Hire Local
If there is an issue, you want to be able to contact the contractor easily. Be wary of door-to-door contractors as they could be in the area for a limited time only. Always check for a local, physical address.
4. Always Ask for a Certificate of Insurance (COI) and Workers' Compsentaion Certificate
If the contractor is not insured, you could be liable for accidents that occur on your property. That is why it is always good to check that the company you hire is properly insured.
5. Anticipate Delays
Understand that if a timeline was outlined in the contract, there are events outside of anyone's control that could delay the work. Plans may need to be adjusted to get the work done correctly promptly.
