FAQ

What is Chip Seal?

Chip seal is a surface treatment that combines one or more layer(s) of liquid asphalt with one or more layer(s) of aggregate (stone). Chip seal is a more cost-effective way of maintaining roads.

Will my road be close?

Typically, we do close down the road that will be chip sealed. The road will be closed for several hours to compact the aggregate into the liquid asphalt and to allow for the final product to dry. If the road needs to remain open, one lane will be open while we are applying the chip seal, and flaggers will direct traffic.

What do I need to do if my driveway is being chip sealed?

Any vehicles or objects need to be removed from your driveway. In addition, we advise that weeds and grass that are along the edges and any that are sprouting in cracks in the driveway are killed. You should also avoid washing your car or any watering that could get onto the chip seal as it will hinder the curing process. You should also allow for the driveway to dry before allowing children and pets to be on it to avoid getting liquid asphalt on them.

What do I need to do if the street/road I live on is being chip sealed?

If we are chip sealing a street where residents park in the street, "No Parking" signs will be placed the day before we begin applying the chip seal. You should keep vehicles and objects off of the street. Avoid activities that will cause water to flow onto the street. Avoid walking your pets or allowing your children to play on the street until it has finished drying.

Can I drive on a road that has just been chip sealed?

Once the road has been opened to the public, it is safe to drive on it. However, you should maintain a low speed to keep loose stones from being kicked up as it could damage your or another's vehicle.

Will it get on my vehicle?

There is a low risk of getting liquid asphalt on your vehicle during chip seal unless you are driving on it before being compacted. Typically when people get asphalt on their vehicle, it is because they drove on a road that was fog sealed before it had finished drying. If you have gotten liquid asphalt on your vehicle, you will want to remove it asap with oil or petroleum-based cleaning solvents like Goo Gone. It's a simple process of spraying the solvent and wiping it off; no scrubbing is required.
